About the Project
For my first-year seminar capstone I worked with Michel Ford and Isaac Hammer on a poster about LGBTQ+ representation in biology. We profiled queer scientists whose work shaped the field, and the organizations pushing for a more inclusive science.
The people we featured include Ruth Gates, the coral reef biologist who became the first woman to lead the International Society for Reef Studies; Kaela Singleton, a Black queer neuroscientist named one of Cell Mentor's 1000 Inspiring Black Scientists; and Bruce Voeller, the biochemist and gay-rights activist who helped change the name of the condition then called GRID to AIDS. We also gathered concrete ideas for change, from LGBTQ+ scholarships to harassment-prevention measures.
Representation has run through my work ever since, from posthuman feminism to the machine bias in Readable and Give Her a Cool New Hat. This poster was where I first put it on a wall. Click it below to read the whole thing.
